The First Great Chapter of Fighting men of the Ultra Templar, between 750 and 1250 men will always be formed into this Chapter.  Formed primarly from the Forge World Carlius.  This was the first group of Ultra Templar that were given the right to form their own chapter from so many Templar surving through the years.

The Knights Griffon are arguably the most drilled and militaristic Order in the Ultra Templar Sector. Their daily rituals mostly consist of strict martial training. A veteran Knight Griffon is the epitome of discipline and soldiery on the field of battle. He is able and willing to hold his ground, attack, or retreat in good order should the situation requires. The Knights Griffon was founded in M32.065 by the Chapter Master as part of his rebuilding of the Ultra Templar after a war against Chaos. The Chapter requested four hundred of the most loyal and devout Ultra Templar to join him at his court in Zaul, where he formed an Order of devout Templar directly responsible for the protection of the Temple to Emperor in the planets capital. The Knights were deeply honored by this selection and accepted the offer, and the Order of Knights Griffon was incepted. When the title of Chapter Master passed to the next Master in M32.462 the Knights Griffon moved their Company house to the Cathedral of Zaul in the Southern Hemisphere to maintain their vow to protect the heart of Ultra Templar realm. As a result, there is some animosity between the Knights Griffon and the Ecclesiarchy, each of whom views the other as imposing on their traditional role.  At any given time there are 100 men at guard at the Temple of the Emperor the rest are always out fighting the wars against the xenos and fallen enemies of the Emperor.

The Knights Griffon are formed from the Codex Astartes with over 150 of them wearing the Tactical Dreadnought Armour (or Terminator Armour) to form the First Company of the Knights Griffon.
